Hachioji is where I live, and this is the Hachioji I actually use: the shopping streets, the ramen counters and the small places most visitors walk straight past. It's everyday Tokyo life, a long way from the guidebooks.

At the north exit of JR Hachiōji Station, under an hour from Shinjuku on the Chūō line.

Covered shopping arcades, local bakeries and the everyday rhythm of a Tokyo suburb getting going.

Shrines and backstreets
Quiet neighbourhood shrines and the old Kōshū Kaidō highway that made Hachioji a post town.

Lunch at one of my favourite counters: a soy broth topped with chopped raw onion, the city's own style.
